The Unexpected Joy of Walking: From Dread to Daily Joy

Four people with colorful backpacks walk on a forest path, surrounded by trees. Overcast sky suggests a chilly, tranquil atmosphere.

If you told me a few years ago that I’d become someone who genuinely loves walking, I’d have laughed in your face. Back then, walking felt boring, pointless, and frankly, like a waste of time. Why walk when you can throw heavy weights around the gym for exercise? Then, in March 2020, the first lockdown hit, and everything changed. Suddenly, walking became one of the few things we could do. With nowhere else to go and nothing else to distract me, I gave it a shot. Spoiler alert: it was awful at first.

I’ll never forget trying to keep up with my mam, a seasoned 5k a day walker. I’d be puffing and red-faced while she casually powered ahead, chatting away like we were sitting on the couch. My legs burned, my lungs protested, and I hated every step. But something shifted after a few weeks. The more I walked, the less I noticed the discomfort and the more I started enjoying… well, everything else: the chats, the fresh air, the way the world seemed to slow down for just a little while.

Walking became more than just exercise - it became a lifeline. It was where I worked through my thoughts, found clarity, and started feeling more grounded. It wasn’t just the physical benefits (though my fitness improved too); it was the mental and emotional boost that hooked me.

Fast forward to now, and walking is one of my favorite ways to unwind. But I get it - starting can feel like the hardest thing in the world. I’ve been there, standing by the door in my trainers, finding a million excuses not to go. Here’s the trick: just put your shoes on. That’s it. No grand plans, no “I’ll do 10k today,” just the simple act of putting on your walking shoes. Once they’re on, stepping outside feels like the next natural thing to do.

The Magic of Walking Outdoors

So, why walking? Because it’s simple, accessible, and ridiculously underrated. Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Mental clarity: There’s something about fresh air and quiet trails that clears your head like nothing else.

  • Mood booster: Walking releases those feel-good endorphins. Even a quick stroll can take the edge off a bad day.

  • Stress relief: The rhythmic motion of your steps and the connection to nature works wonders on your nervous system.

It’s not about fancy equipment or memberships; it’s about showing up for yourself and finding joy in the simple things. Whether you’re chatting with friends, listening to your favorite playlist, or soaking in the silence, walking has a way of reminding you what’s important.

Getting Started (Even When You Don’t Feel Like It)

Let’s be real: you’ll rarely feel motivated to walk. Waiting for motivation is like waiting for a sunny day in winter - you might be waiting a while. The key is to take action first. Here’s how:

  1. Get in the mood by taking action. Put your trainers by the door, schedule your walk into your diary, or better yet, RSVP to our next group walk. The more intentional you are, the more likely you are to follow through.

  2. Make it a priority. Treat it like an appointment you can’t miss. Block out the time and stick to it.

  3. Commit with others. Joining a group walk makes you more accountable - plus, it’s way more fun. Our last group adventure through the Djouce Woods turned into an unforgettable mix of laughter, chats, and accidental detours (hello, Yellow Trail!).

Your Next Step

If you’ve been thinking about starting, let this be your sign. Put on your trainers, step outside, and see where the path takes you. Remember, the hardest part is just starting. Once you take that first step, the rest feels easier.

And if you’re ready to make walking a regular habit, why not join us? Our next group walk is coming up soon - RSVP now to lock it in and give yourself that little extra push.

Next week, we’ll dive into the art of building new habits. Because once you’ve mastered walking, who knows what other joys you might discover?

Until then, see you on the trails!
