Reflections on Progress: Building a Stronger Year Ahead

Updated: Jan 14

As the year comes to a close, it’s natural to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed. But at Freedom Fitness, we’re not about grand resolutions or promises to completely reinvent yourself. Instead, we believe in celebrating the stuff that actually matters - the small wins, the effort you’ve put in, and setting goals that are achievable and meaningful to you. Because you don't need to reinvent yourself; you just need to keep being you, perhaps with a little extra oomph.

Here are some thoughts to carry with you into the new year:

1. Reflect on the Wins, Big and Small

Maybe you added 5kg to your deadlift, found confidence in your squat, or simply showed up even on days when it was tough. Those are the wins that matter. Strength isn’t just about muscles - it’s about resilience, persistence, and showing up for yourself. Take a moment to recognize those achievements, no matter how small they might feel. They’re the proof in the Christmas pudding that you’re moving forward.

2. Redefine Success

Success doesn’t mean perfection. So let’s let it go. Let go of perfection, and focus on progress, instead of some unattainable ideal. Maybe success for you in 2024 was about moving better, feeling stronger, or finding joy in movement again. Success looks different for everyone, it evolves as you do, and that’s the beauty of it.

3. Set Intentions, Not Resolutions

New Year resolutions can feel like ultimatums. They are often rigid, unwavering, and eventually break. Instead, think about setting intentions that align with your values - things that inspire you to take action without boxing you into a corner. Maybe it’s, “I want to move pain-free” or “I want to feel more confident under the bar.” These kinds of intentions keep the door open for growth while honoring where you are right now, without the pressure of an all-or-nothing approach.

4. Focus on What You Can Control

Life is messy, hectic, full of curveballs, and it’s not always possible to stick rigidly to a plan. What counts is how you adapt and respond to the curveballs. You can’t control everything, but you can control your effort, your mindset, and how consistently you show up for yourself. That’s where real progress happens, the type that builds resilience and keeps you moving forward - when you focus on the things within your reach and let go of the rest.

5. Celebrate the Process

Here’s the thing about strength training: It’s a slow burn. It teaches us that results take time. Progress isn’t just in the numbers you hit but in the habits you’ve built, the skills you’ve learned, and the confidence you’ve gained along the way. The journey itself is worth celebrating - it’s what makes the destination so rewarding. A stronger, healthier, and more capable you.

As we step into a new year, let’s let go of the pressure of unrealistic expectations. Instead, let's embrace the opportunity to keep growing, one small step at a time. You don’t need a "new you" next year - you just need to keep building on the fabulous person you already are. Even if you don't quite see it yet, I do.

From all of us at Freedom Fitness, thank you for being part of our community this year. Here’s to a stronger, healthier, and more confident 2025.

Let's do this!

See you in the gym,
